'TYPICAL WHITE PEOPLE' ARE SO DULL!

    Obviously, as you can tell, I've been experimenting with embedding music videos in my blog. It's been fun and in some ways brought back a lot of memories.

     Truly the music you listen to becomes the sound track of your life. I can tell when and what was going on in my life by the 1st few bars of a song! You probably can to.

     I feel music is one of God's great gifts to mankind. It is an emotion enhancer. The right type of music can help you do most anything. From road trips to sermons to exercise! From weddings to funerals and everything in between, we set our lives to music.

     So I have to ask, where did all the "fun" music go?

     Don't get me wrong. Yes I'm a fundamentalist Christian, yes I'm a minister. But I like all sorts of music. There's some really good secular music and there's some really good Christian Music conversely there is some really crappy secular music and way too much crappy Christian music!

     I try to appreciate every generations music, but I have to tell you, it's been hard the last ten years or so, because there is a significant lack of what I term 'fun' music.

     Pop music today seems to fall into one of two categories:

1. Rap: Which seems to be about either dry humping on the dance floor or trying to prove how tough you are by using the language of a mentally ill 14 year old. Obviously not 1st choice on my car stereo.

or

2.  What I call Vocal Histrionics. You know the type, the lyrics don't really matter (if there are any!), the singer just makes a series of vocal noises up and down the scale, presuming that this is enlightened music. While interesting, truly, if you're not Mariah Carrey, please don't do this! It bores me and gives my dog an earache.

     When I talk about 'fun' music, I'm talking about music that leaves you feeling good, like a visit with an old and dear friend. Most music today seems to leave people feeling empty, hungry for the next hit, yet never satisfied emotionally.

     I have several playlists on my car stereo (which is where I do most of my listening). Someday's I feel like country, someday's I feel like the rat pack, someday's I feel like classical and someday's I just want to relive my youth so I listen to an extended 70's list.

     I feel bad for kids today, because they don't really have any music to hang their life on. Most of us who came up through the 60's & 70's and yes even the 80's can probably quote song lyrics verbatim...whether we want to or not! I mean who doesn't know at least some of the lyrics from songs such as  "Pinball Wizard" or "Kung fu Fighting" or even "Spiders and snakes"? Seriously, I have to be careful when I'm around our College and career group to not let on how many lyrics I remember. Quoting the chorus from "Lady Marmalade" sounds like a good way to get fired! (and for those of you under 30, no I'm not referring to the Christian Aguilera remake.)

     Maybe the music today is meaningful to kids, I'm not sure, but I think I'll stick to the "fun' music . At least they'll wonder why I always seem in a good mood!
